The Thimble And The Sea

A thimble once audited the sea,

holding but a few drops, not more.

It questioned with officious decree

why the sea was bound by the shore.

Perched upon a wee finger, it frowned

at the sea for not touching the sky,

admonishing, “You’ll never be crowned

if higher you do not fly.”

“Why slosh about, lacking all shape?”

the tight little thimble complained.

“Each crest you raise, falls back misshaped,

your tides by the moon are constrained.”

Yet the sea went on murmuring its song,

with whales and mountains in its womb.

The thimble, too small, held on but not long,

a puddle, shallow, became its tomb.

The thimble, a voice in the wilderness, soon lost to the powers of nature. You can’t debate or argue with nature, it always does its own unpredictable thing. A delightful story poem conveyed with great visuals. I see it as a children’s poem, illustrated with beautiful images. A lovely read DIVYA. Have a great day.

This poem is so funny and true! Your use of the word 'audited' made me think of small-minded bureaucrats that can't see past their own bottom line. They always want to quell the ideas and ambitions of those who see past antiquated laws, profits, and how we can make our planet of 'more use' to us.
Those with shallow minds are always convinced that their tidy way of unquestioned belief is the only way to live.
I also love the fable-like style you wrote this in, the first stanza is especially strong
Thought-provoking poem written in a style that both adults and children would love, well done

Of course, thank you for writing!
I love the poem and the illustration. You have reminded me of my spiritual heritage. As a student of Sufism, many times I heard this metaphor spoken: Feeling separate is an illusion. We are each but a small wavelet that has risen from the boundless ocean that is the Unity of all creation, the One, and we each will fall back into that ocean that is the Creator. All things are contained in that boundless ocean of One.

Thank you so much for the kind and understanding words, dear Martha.
Splendidly rhymed, and with a message for all of us: Never vote for a thimble (As an American, I can attest to this danger.).

I love your sense of humour, dear John. Thank you so much for the great review, my friend. :)
This is great! I really like the juxtaposition of the thimble and sea. Something that has very little volume yet critical of the natural enormous sea. This feels like a good new modern fable or children's story. But not childish in the least. Whales and mountains in its womb. Greatness indeed. It also reminds me of less talented haters criticizing true talent.

Poor thimble. The sea cannot be controlled and it thinks in terms much bigger than the little thimble, which is overwhelmed by greatness.

Maybe we should have a service for the thimble.
Some humans get too full of themselves and think they are a great ocean and are not satisfied unless they touch the sky...but there are limits.

A surprising little poem, a child-like fable with a deeper message underlying its simple theme. Somehow, that thimble reminds me of someone, just perhaps a little taller!

The message I glean from this poem is that one should always be careful of who and what they question. Just because someone or something acts in a way that differs from our own experience or viewpoint, doesn't mean what they do is wrong, just a way of life and doing things that is suitable for them. The seemingly know-it-all Thimble has paid the price for his ego and ignorance by lambasting the sea that clearly always knows what it is doing and remains content doing such.

A clever little poem with a moral message for those who like to stick their thimble sized brains into areas they don't belong.
