Life and death
pretend to be opposites
like night and day

but they are not
They are in tandem
in the game of devouring us

They follow each other
as wailing follows singing
decay follows bloom

Life brings us love
so death can take it away
adding tomb after tomb

till every inch within
is crowded with headstones
we can count no more

Life eats us up
long before we die
Death waits to digest
only what remains

In this dance
of shadow and light
they move entwined

like lovers
like allies

feeding together
so that between them
nothing is spared

My aunt aged 93 died a month ago. In truth the best part of her died nearly four years ago. She existed with dementia and very little light crossed her path in those final years. The visits to her were painful. Painful to witness her decline.

No wonder how solemn and true death is to us mortals it will forever be a fear and an absolute source of hate,guilt and sorrow
