Bomb Shelter

Bomb Shelter

A Poem by Thomas Emile Vaughen

Bomb shelter temperament.
Bundling together the sandbags. I'm going
to bunker down. Dig deep in the ground.
Get the lantern on.

No telegraph lines, cable time,
news recipe reviews
drama llama. It's all rather sober.
Though I will accumulate enough alcohol
to obliterate me many times over.

There are wars outside. Poverty,
pride. Thugs strutting through streets
and bandits in the banks. And the
only people I can really say a nice word about
are the innocent Greggs ladies.

Who kept me amply dosed with the coffee
de la roast, and croissants when I was too
fancy for toast.

Even cutting down to the essential essentials
leaves the budget blitzed and the wallet bleeding.
Can't photosynthesize what my spirit is
needing.

There's a deficit of soul
in this world that I'm feeling.

Like the Ukrainian army, I'm running out of ammo -
from life's little battles, I retreat in my camo.

this is really good! i like the blend of scary & serious imagery of bomb shelters, looters, etc with the almost satirical tone, like with "drama llama". also, you're a lot better than rhyming than i am, haha. i think my favorite line is "can't photosynthesize what my spirit is needing"
