An Experiment

An Experiment

A Poem by Thomas Emile Vaughen

I'm still looking for the truth,
but not in dark forests.
As I get older,
I understand that we all
still need
the Teddy Bear on the bed.

I'm still looking to really
feel that I am
the thing
I want to be,
in the flesh of me. Combing my hair. Sat on the chair.

The key is acting.
The Grand Performance.
We shift - life a stage -
between roles;
I am painfully quiet,
but I smoke, wine, smile
and sing Human League
for the whole neighbourhood to behold.

I'm still looking for the truth,
but not in dark forests,
which harbour ominous lakes
cloaked in leaves, rabid wolves,
ghouls, gruesome and morbid
for the thought of it all.

When I wake,
I will want to see you.
