Parting for Eons

Parting for Eons

A Poem by Thomas Emile Vaughen

With one last breath,
what would I say?
To the encroaching night,
I cannot barter away.
When the wine, and the stress
and the absence of sleep
come casually in
brandishing Scythe -
do I go without a peep?

Of course not, my lovely.
I'll say it softly and quick -
the dying gasp, your name on my lip.

I'll say that the stars
will shine residue of me,
light will find you in tears,
but never shall you grieve...

For my ghost will love you,
as I have on Earth. I'll whisper through
branches in autumn winds. And be the warmth
of a winter, you keep treasured within.

I love you so much,
even if I must go
Abruptly to Heaven.
Find hope in the freshly
fallen snow.
