Forgive the SimplificationA Poem by ThurstonSlowly we get whittled down. The wolves finally overran us no bigger than rats nor as vicious, apologetic even -- deferential with small bites -- chewing and smiling as if enquiring after our hurt. We still kept a brave face. People nodded and kept pity from us. Some, meaning well, enquired after our heart coughed suddenly and hurried on angry with themselves for such a thoughtless remark. Forgive the simplification: courage deserts in small quantities unnoticed. -- not fear, but familiar with surrender -- no longer an outrage, content with helping the victim up. © 2010 Thurston |
