Free was my very first cat. He had beautiful orange stripped fur, the greenest eyes, and the longest whiskers. We got him from one of our neighbors and since we paid nothing for him, wee named him Free. What's really funny is that Free's birthday was on July 4th!

When we moved from our apartment to our first house, Free became an indoor/outdoor cat. He liked catching chipmunks and birds. One summer day, my sister dedided to squirt Free with the garden hose. Free didn't lke that at all and ran as far away from the hose as possible.

During the warm summer months, you could find me with Free in the hammock. It was our favorite spot and I would talk to Free and pet his beautiful orange fur as he purred like a car engine. We loved our snuggle time in the hammock. It was special for both of us.

Growing up, my sister and I had many Barbie dolls. One of my Christmas Barbie doll's leg looked like it went through a meat grinder- but it was Free who had done the damage. My poor Barbie doll's leg was ground plastic from the ankle to the upper thigh. You could peel back the plastic from the upper thigh! Dad took that Barbie doll- along with a few others that obviously couldn't be played with anymore and used them for target practice.

Every night, when Free was done snuggling at my feet, he made his way up to my beloved teddy bear Kelly and used her as a sratching post. One morning, I awoke to discover that Kelly's right paw was completly removed! My mom took a needle and thread and sewed Kelly up good as new.

We had Free for several, wonderful years before the time had come for him to cross the Rainbow Bridge. I still miss him. I always will. But I have fond memories and old photos to look back on to remember my first cat, my best friend, my Free.
