ON THIS NIGHTA Story by Tina KlineHe got more than candy on this Halloween night. It was a bone dry chilly night. Dried fallen autumn leaves scuttled about being pushed around by wind gusts. Overhead in the dark sky the moon shone down brightly and the stars seemed to spin as they sparkled and winked. Several black cats sat on the porch of an older looking home, their yellow eyes unblinking as they watched a group of children coming up the walk. They were all dressed in Halloween costumes and carrying various bags and buckets with Halloween themes on them in their hands. One cat stood, arching its back, its body puffing out and hissed at the approaching children, its yellow glaring eyes narrowing. “Hey, cool! Monster cat!” one little girl who was dressed like a witch said. “Yeah.” said a boy who was dressed like a vampire. Undeterred the children continued up the walk to the bottom of the steps. A second black cat stood, arched its back and hissed loudly and growled. It's fangs flashed wetly in the gleam of the porch light. It rose up a paw, claws extended, as if to swipe at the intruders if they continued. “Ah...that looks scary.” a little girl in a fairy princess outfit said. “It's just part of the Halloween decorations.” said a little boy dressed as Darth Vader. “Um...” hesitated the vampire. Now the third cat stood with its two companions, growling, it's ears laid back, body puffed up, crouched low, hind legs bunched as if it was about to leap. “Let's go.” said a little girl in a ghost outfit. “Yeah.” agreed the witch. “I don't want candy from this house anymore.” “Ah. Come on!” said the vampire and Darth Vader. They all stood there at the bottom of the steps looking at the three threatening cats and thinking about the candy they wouldn't be getting if they left. But the cats standing there, all black and threatening, well, maybe the risks outweighed the benefits, they thought to themselves. Then the door suddenly opened with a loud creaking, very Halloween, and a woman stood there looking down at the kids while cooing to her three cats, “Come kitties, come my babies.” The three cats stopped their threatening postures and ran into the house through the open door, tails high and purring. The group of children stood there watching with open mouths and wide eyes. The woman was dressed in a long black skirt and black blouse with ankle length black boots and a black scarf around her neck. She smiled at the children. “Halloween Trick Or Treaters?” she said, her voice very musical. “Free candy night?” The children all as one, took a couple steps backwards. They were feeling sudden uncertainty and fear. “Come now, don't be afraid.” she cooed. “Come inside and look at all the Halloween decorations I have. Plus I have lots of free candy for you.” Several of the children shook their heads and backed away. Two broke ranks and ran off. “Oh, come on.” The woman cooed to the remaining children. “You want candy? I have some for you. Lots actually. Wait here.” She turned and went into her house, leaving the door open. Several more children ran off, hurrying after their friends. Now only the vampire and the witch stood at the bottom of the steps. The witch looked at the vampire, “Let's go. This is too weird and creepy.” “Ah, come on. Let's be brave. I bet this lady is going to give us lots of candy.” he shook his orange bag with a silhouette of a jack o' lantern on it to emphasize how little candy they actually had. “Don't be stupid.” the witch hissed at him. “This is too weird. I'm leaving.” and she ran off, racing to catch up with her friends who were on the porch of another house further along the street. Now the vampire stood there alone at the bottom of the steps and looking after his fleeing friend. Suddenly he felt all alone and was thinking maybe he should get out of here before the lady returned with her offering of lots of candy. Just as he made the decision to flee too the woman was back on the porch and talking. “Ohh. Everyone left but you? Ohh.” she looked at him smiling her sweetest smile possible. The three black cats were back and brushing against her legs and purring. They popped from beneath her skirt, tails high then disappeared underneath it again. As they did this, taking turns popping out, they purred very loudly. “All the candy is for you, young vampire.” She shook a large brown cloth bag. “Come on in, my child. Partake of this bounty I offer you.” The boy dressed as a vampire looked up at her, found himself looking into her shimmering cat like emerald green eyes. Suddenly he wanted to go into her house and eat the bounty that she was offering him. All of a sudden he thought himself the most luckiest kid in the world and she was nothing more than a beautiful dark angel with nothing but compassion and love in her eyes for him and all of humanity. Smiling, he hurried up the porch steps and stood beside her looking up. The cats were there rubbing up against his legs now, purring loudly. The woman smiled down at him and took his hand which he let her. “Come inside, my young vampire.” He followed her inside and gasped with awe at the sight of her front room. It was all black cat decorations, bats, spiders, vampires, werewolves and other decorations of a Gothic nature. He was in awe. She pointed to the couch and he sat, still staring at everything, trying to take it all in. She handed him the brown bag full of candy. He took it and held it close, “Thanks!” His grin of delight was wide. She sat down beside him. “Are you not going to open it and look inside?” He hesitated, “Okay.” He opened it and saw a bag full of small candies. Snickers, Milky Ways, Three Musketeers, Hershey bars, M&Ms and much more. “Cool! Thanks!” She smiled and scooted over to sit beside him. “I'm glad you like your Halloween treat. Now I'd like mine.” She took him by the upper arms, pulling him close. He stared at her in alarm. “What are you doing?” “Getting ready to enjoy my treat. You're a pretend vampire. I'll make you a real one. But first I must kill you dead.” “No!” “You can't refuse. You're in my home now, accepted my Halloween treat so you can't refuse.” “No! NO!” He squirmed and thrashed but no way could he escape her hold. She was cold and strong. She pulled him into her arms and shook him until his head fell back, exposing his throat. Then she struck, serpent fast, and sank her fangs into his neck and drank. She drank and drank, siphoning his blood from his body and taking his life into herself and giving to him death. He soon enough became cold and bluish then he died. She withdrew her fangs and laid his dead body gently back on the couch. “You were a yummy treat, my young vampire.” She licked her lips and wiped any remaining blood from her face with her fingers. She licked them clean. “Don't worry my dead little wannabe vampire boy. You're not really dead but undead now and not a fakey vampire but a real one.” She giggled, the sound surreal, lovely and astonishingly beautiful and seductive.
