GREEN SKY

GREEN SKY

A Story by Tina Kline
"

A brief White Wolves tale.

"
The night sky overhead flickered with flashes of green. The northern lights moved above the bare tree branches. The two white wolves trotted along, shoulder to shoulder, muzzles parted, tongues lolling out. They were content to be together as they traveled across the Alaskan landscape. The sky was enchanting, magical and full of mystery but the two white wolves attention was focused on something up ahead, something slipping from the shadowy evergreen forest. Something that they found tantalizing and alluring. A slender White Tail deer.
The deer had been finding plenty to eat this early part of the winter and there was lots of meat on its' bones. The two white wolves felt the hunger stirring in their bellies. Then they felt it coiling and twisting. They had to have that deer.
As one they moved forward, the green sky painting the landscape with a tracery of its emerald beauty. The aurora borealis hissed and crackled as the electricity danced across the night sky. But the deer wasn't to be fooled. It caught the wolves scent on the cold breeze and leaped forward. It landed in a running position and was moving out of the forest and shooting across the snowy open space. The two white wolves took chase.

The deer shot forward, a dark splotch leaping over the green painted snow, meaning to preserve its' life from the jaws of the two wolves chasing it. The wolves were determined to have their meal. Suddenly the wolves came to an abrupt halt as a Grizzly bear, still awake not having yet gone into hibernation, lunged for the frightened deer. The White Tail had been fully occupied on the wolves and hadn't scented or heard this threatening menace. As soon as the lumbering yet swift giant rose up in a looming fashion the deer leaped sideways just out of its' reach and continued its' flight. The disappointed bear let out an angry roar.
The two white wolves stood and watched the angry bear for a moment then turned and trotted back the way they had come. The deer continued its' flight of life and slipped into the far side of the snowy open space. The two wolves would hunt again and find their meal. They were young and healthy and could manage a few days without food like most wolves could.

Overhead in the sky the green aurora borealis continued to  flicker and hiss, moving and shifting as the solar winds struck it. Its' light painted the landscape below in an eerie green light. The wolves moved from the outer edge of the forest into the deeper shadowy part where the green northern lights no longer reached. They licked each others muzzles, crossed their fluffy white tails and yipped little happy sounds. They entered their cave in a small hillside and curled together. They would venture forth later to hunt, but for now they were content to sleep curled together, safe in each others warmth and undying love and devotion.

You tell a story so well. It's like being there, watching the story unfold. I loved it. It has all my favorite elements, the night, the snow, the woods, the wolves, and lets not forget the Northern Lights. I have never seen the Aurora Borealis in person, just in beautiful pictures, so I didn't know sound accompanied the light show. The close family-type relationship between the wolves is evident and well crafted. Excellent write my friend.

You're welcome. and thanks! :)
Nice one. Perfect harmony of all things. Nature is beautiful in its raw simplicity. We are all now so removed from it. You find contentment through it. There will be another time for all the players in your wll told little drama of Life's eternal struggle.
