Red Roses

Red Roses

A Poem by Tina Kline

She cried herself to sleep one cold, lonely night

haunted by a lonely heart and doubt of a future bright

she longed for the comfort of a beating heart near

she dreamed of Heaven with each painful tear

her health was failing though only in midlife

the pain she felt cut her soul like a knife

that night he entered her life in what seemed a dream

through her open window he swept in, his magic agleam

she felt it shine as she gazed into his crimson red eyes

his white hand stroked her hair and she felt desire rise

they kissed and touched with passion, she needed him so much

his white skin felt so cold and charged with life with each touch

they made love and the vampire seed entered, to bloom within her

he whispered “soon my love we can be together forever”

he gave her a tender kiss and vanished, leaving a red rose behind

in the morning she questioned the encounter, but the rose haunted her mind

he came to her and made love again the following night

another seed he planted and left a red rose in the moon’s shimmering light

when she woke she recalled she dreamed of her Dark Lover once more

was he a ghost, some phantom who entered without using a window or door

she held the single red rose and took in its enchanted perfume

come to me again, she thought, I need you, please come to me soon

he came to her again, pleasuring her with his deep dark passion

he planted another vampire seed within her, she didn’t know it even happened

in the morning there on her nightstand another red rose waiting

she smiled, thrilled by her passion filled nights and wild matings

he returned, bent over her, her eyes flew open wide

he kissed her, she murmured and with pleasure she did sigh

he seems too real, he seems so strongly alive

if it wasn’t for his passionate lovemaking I wouldn’t survive

“it is time for you to leave this life and come with me

you are no longer human, I’ve gifted you with immortality”

confused she sat up in bed and saw the world had indeed changed

gone was her loneliness, gone was all her pain

out into the night to his home they soared hearts entwined together

gifted with perfect health a red rose each night of beauty forever.

Awesome and eerie feel. Love it. Makes me wonder about what one might be willing to give up, to sacrifice for acceptance, for something other than grief. Love the image of the red rose bedside. Great write!
