The evening sky was a burning flame as he rode his camel Every night he did the same as dreams drifted through his memory and the thirst was always there, a thirst no water could tame
Visions of a Pharaoh wandering the sands of Egypt Alexandria, ah Alexandria and a beautiful Queen who wasn’t so innocent The hot winds of the night whisper her name Cleopatra…Cleopatra Somewhere in time two Roman men hear and look about, searching…. Julius Caesar and Mark Anthony Visions of a Pharaoh haunted his tortured mind
I need blood to ease this fever of my brain I have been alive too long, centuries come and go but only one stays in my mind The time that I was born and lived, the time of Cleopatra, Queen of Egypt
The camel strode across the sandy landscape The pyramids rose up dark against the red evening sky Everything around him burned red….He must feed and feed now He was too starved, his mind like molten crimson, he needed blood and only human blood, fresh from the vein, would do
Even in these modern times, the early 20th century there was plenty of blood in Egypt Plenty of the English walking the streets of Cairo The lure and money from finding ancient treasures drew them here in droves Stealing the soul of Egypt didn’t bother the English one little bit But he didn’t really care one way or the other about these thefts He wasn’t human anymore, that condition ended for him centuries ago
Now he was a blood hungry demon on the hunt once again He was a blood thirsty monster picking out his human meal to suck dry There’d soon be another dried human husk for the always present English to discover He loved to witness the fear that these discovers put in these aliens to Egypt The fearful whispered talk of killer mummies stalking the night streets amused him
He was one of many vampires of Egypt always seeking the crimson flood and this exotic place where so many tasty foreigners flocked to helped create this fabulous location, this ever flowing oasis of blood
OMG Tina......................this is AWESOME! Your use of historical names such as Cleopatra, Julius Caesar, etc. makes it gripping, and absolutely one of your best writes!
This goes in my favorite file! The concept of an ever flowing oasis of blood is one that shall drip off the pages of poetry for many a day!! I can just imagine this being read aloud!....chilling, absolutely chilling!
My, this is a strong and unusual write, very original. Though as an Englishman, gulp, slightly uncomfortable, too! The notion of an oasis of blood is very clever as it reverses the cliched idea of an oasis being a place of calm, milk and honey etc. The obsession of the thirsty one runs through every verse of the poem. I esp like the final lines and the flood/blood ending. My favourite dabs are 'a thirst now water wld tame' and 'crismson flood'.

When Venus gets too close catfish have been known to come up out of the water onto the shore, feed awhile, then go back in.
