HIS LIKENESS

HIS LIKENESS

A Poem by Vatsal Rohilla (account shifted)

I have a likeness placed in front of me,
and I am plunged deep in memory.

The likeness is of someone I know,
and he has left this world,
by him, in the likeness, shrubs grow,
shrubs- green as emerald.

He wears upon his face a smile,
and appears felicitous,
he seems to know things, while
I seem oblivious.

He's the one who inspires me and
captures my imagination,
I am plunged in thoughts and
am in contemplation.

I sigh why did he leave the earth,
so very quietly and,
before I, his fan, took birth-
before I was on land.

But he has attained immortality,
for his good deeds,
I am just a mere follower, he
is the one who leads.

I still have the likeness in front of me,
it extorts sorrow and evokes glee.

I wrote this poem today, as a tribute to my favourite singer- Mukesh. He was a good human being, besides being a great singer. Feel free to comment and criticize.

First, let me say using the word "likeness" is so much more expressive than using "picture" . . . love this choice. Yours appears to be a message of adoration, but not necessarily based on anything tangible that you've experienced firsthand. This could be a message written for a parent or grandparent, as well. In another sense, this could be any admired person who serves as an inspiration. You've made your feelings clear & palpable thru-out the poem. Frankly, I think the beauty of the message lies within you, not in this other person. You have created this idea of how a person might be, someone you've never met, so to me, I believe you are really showing us the beauty within yourself.
