Barren

Barren

A Poem by VelvetPotato

She wasn't barren like the landscape,
From refractory blaze of fire,
She was barren like the hope,
for future generations - without desire.

How can one live guilt-free,
Raising an innocent baby,
Whose life is riddled with struggles, damnation,
From acid rain in crops, dwindling species?

A reality like the charred trees,
But 'fruitful' pressure - obligation,
From ones with ignorance or without care,
About approaching world decimation.

You know these lines made me think of my 20 year old granddaughter. She has told me categorically that she won't be having any children. She thinks the world is a sh.t hole and she doesn't want to add to its problems. That makes me feel bad, because my generation has got to accept some blame for the state of our planet. No wonder she spends so much time on netflix and on her phone.

No, she was fertile...she gave birth in a barren world headed for decimation...
it is sad the world that is being left for our children in which to try to grow up.

I teach so many 18-20 year olds who just immerse themselves in technology, cell phones, texting...because it is their safe world...hardly any of them watch the news...they just are too cynical and frustrated.
