I Sacrificed the Meaning

I Sacrificed the Meaning

A Poem by VelvetPotato

I sacrificed the meaning
I chopped up the content
For words like snares beating
And rhyming, flowing nonsense
So when at home reading
My piece is not forgotten
Swarming thoughts, repeating
Addicting like sugar fondant
But when faced with seasoned greetings
From viewers skeptical of concept
Far less intriguing
Facile and rhythmic dissent

The meaning is everything. When I started writing poetry I wrote in strict rhyme and meter. It was difficult to convey deep meaning within that straight jacket. I have evolved with my writing. I am happy about that. I have my own style. Every now and again my muse takes me back to where I started. It was good to read you. Be safe and be well.

Thank you Chris. As a newer writer I am working to get out of my comfort zone and straight jacket. B.. read more
this is one of my favorites from you....since I am a big proponent of content in poetry....
and that meaning is not lost in form...
sometimes when poems are developed to fit a certain form...they may read aloud like they are supposed to....but there is no real meaning that strikes the heart of the reader.
There is a coldness to the piece...there is only nonsense and surface skiing....
Like in the Billy Collins poem
"I want them to ski across the surface of the poem"
don't reach into it...just hear it enjoy it for the sound and look, and move on.
