Sonnet on poetry

Poetry is a dangerous siren’s song,
That calls the soul towards a chasm deep,
Dulling the mind and making the heart long,
For that which it may touch yet never keep.

A Sonnet is too much the friend of truth,
And leaves no room for self-deluding lies,
It conjures up the honesty of youth,
And artifice through artifice soon dies.

Essential truths will spill onto the page,
Transpiring through the pores of consciousness,
Leaving exposed the battles that we wage,
To build facades of hope for hopelessness.

I can deny the painful song I hear,
But it’s too late; its message is too clear.

I LOVE IT! I've been thinking about quitting writing lately, but there's a strange magic in writing, isn't there? You talk to yourself and your dark side and you can't escape from there. It helps me understand myself, and I guess I couldn't handle that discomfort! Makes me think am I a bad person!? And I don't have good answers for that.

Please don't give up writing. You have a gift that should not be put aside as many people write, but few are writers at their core. I know you are one of the few whose point of view matters.

A good deal of my writing deals with painful topics for the past or present. And I know that writing is a dual edge sword--it can be cathartic, but it can also allow us to wallow in our own pain, sadness, disappointment, regret and lead us to a downward spiral. We have to watch for that. But on balance, I believe that writing about things we care about--including our own doubts, pain, disappointment, sorrow, is uplifting and can also leave something of value for others when we share it. And that is a good thing indeed.

I bid you peace, dear lady. And please continue on your personal journey. You are as unique as a snowflake--none other like you in the universe. And so is your voice, your perspective, and your truth.
