WHITE GOLD AND...

WHITE GOLD AND...

A Poem by Vol

I was almost a jeweler once,

in someone else’s store. I sold

wedding rings, watches and gifts

to men who wanted nothing more

than to get lucky, maybe just this once.

I learned about watery peridots, opals,

and a hundred other faded bots of glitter,

and why diamonds sparkle like

Mesmer’s voice repeating

Buy me,

Buy me!”

While I just shook my head.

Diamonds are water, clear and cold as

ICE, something for the bloodless fairies.

NO!

Give me a verdant emerald the color

of Robin Hood’s cape to create an epic

of justice and righteousness. Emeralds

heal with just a touch, help the blind

see, ease a birth and banish evil spirits.

Green fire is cool, a balm to quench

the thirst of a dry and troubled spirit,

or open the chakra of your hard heart,

a drop of crystal fauna to hang with

pearls between pink breasts.

Almost, but...

A sapphire, blue as any depth of ocean,

or sky so deep you can see through to

the dark on the other side. They are the

Ten Commandments stone straight from

the throne of God, as clear as heaven.

In the depths of that blue there is a spirit

that speaks to our own, that says beauty

is a fire that does not burn, but soothes

a troubled mind. Even the eyes of Chava

look out from there and plunder the smiling

dragon inside us all

OH!

Give me blood-red Rubies to make me

HUMAN.

Blood is life, where the soul swims,

love burns, and hate flows like lava!

The red in me lusts for beauty, awe,

and anger, hot as Adam’s footprint when

he stumbled from the garden. I think

my blood is made of

Rubies, ratnaraj,

the king of jewels

a frozen flame.

AND...

What a crown I wear!

Ooh! This just reminded me of a science class experiment where the teacher showed us different colours of flame. I was most impressed with green, which my fog filled memory seems to recall was caused by burning aluminum powder (forglgive spelling but predictive text changed aluminium to our spelling, where I much prefer yours, as well as EZ, being short for easy and erm, others too)
But getting back to the point (I have a point!) My first engagement happened despite her picking a ring with sapphire in it, which she believed to be a curse or jinx or other hokum, but seeing as we only lasted another three months before she left (minus the jinxed ring of course, because I didn't want her to suffer any more bad luck...much)
I chucked it in my mums water tank, so the only possible person it could bring any kind of luck to is some future plumber who finds it.
It did bring me some luck though as I've never seen her again, which is almost as good as her bursting into flames in my mind as I write this.
And to think all this diamond nonsense was a perpetuated myth from a cinema ad for yep, a jewellers shop! Go figure!
Now I know this review may come across as somewhat bitter but honestly, ten sapphire and diamond rings just to be shot of her.
I'll save you the tales of the others, because I still can't quite believe I was daft enough to go through it all again...and again...etc.

Always that little piece of jewelry to buy a heart...but somehow, always returned. Either in heartache...
or "thanks, Goodbye"---

We know love is not a material thing...there can be representations in the form of Cameos, diamond rings....but the real thing is the real thing....no jewelry needed to buy it.
