PEEKABOO

PEEKABOO

A Poem by Vol

Time… time… life is short. I mean,

you have no idea! It’s like all of it

arrived yesterday and leaves today,

because everything that could

or will possibly happen already has,

and lies on the floor like dead leaves.

Pick one up and look, you might remember

what happened in that moment when our

eyes met.

I can even hear the conversation I had

with a friend, in 1965. “I don’t know, man,

I’m fifteen and feel exactly like I have my

whole life: the me who is; when I was six

I was the me I am…”

Today, with the hurricanes, earthquakes, and floods,

all the broken shards of love and beauty, and death,

this “life” come and gone, nothing has changed again.

I’m still me, but with more color on the palette, just as

arrogant, just as solid as ever.

I tell myself, they can measure history

all the way back to before it began.

Turns out, carbon is a calendar, but, so what?

What is the difference between four and a

half billion years of Earth, and my awareness

of the split second seventy-six I’ve lived?

Just two objective spans of time inside my

head, seen subjectively.

I don’t believe nothing existed before me,

but I can’t empirically prove it’s not true.

The contents of my brain box can account

for all anomalies like science and art and the

whole of human experience as nothing more

than my own creation to explain the vast

emptiness of my own galaxies, full of stars,

full of me.

Strangely, and wonderfully, as you said it - our entire human experience lies in our brain box and we'll never know another. To us, existence began when we began living and ends with us. Do those 4.5 billion years really matter? Its a very sobering thought, especially when it all seems so quickly past. How to make sense of it, I wonder.

Vol, I was reading off-site to avoid keying my horrendous password ...but, of course, your writing inspired me once again so..
Like you've said somewhere before, we are spiritual souls trapped in material bodies.
I do believe it's all as simple as this: Humans are "the third" of angelic beings deceived by Lucifer who was cast to Earth in wait for his destruction. We were "deceived" so, God, being all righteous, gives us a chance to be redeemed. However, we do deserve some form of punishment, thereby, God, in His infinite wisdom, assigned each of us our particular situation.
Everything else that happens is merely consequence. There is always a reaction to every action.
Vol, I just love your writings! You put my itty bitty brain to work!

Yep. It does feel like it all arrived yesterday, leaves tomorrow, withinstructions to follow at a later date.
And the 15 year old that was the same as the 6 year old too rings true. Although hopefully a little bit wiser, says the almost 57 year old who still stands on upturned plugs!
Remember as kids when you asked your parents what they did before you were born and the replied, "just waiting for you to be born?" Well that's exactly what I believed, with the whole planet just waiting around like bored film extras until I was born and the real Truman show could begin.
I also doubt the apocalypse will come as a result of my demise. I really hope not, because who the he'll will bury us all? 😃
