A Poem by Vol

In the shade of wild trees grew muscadine vines,

and in our Tarzan youth we would swing out

on them from the top of cliffs over the creek

sixty feet below and we did not

fall down, but yodeled our joy.

We sat cross-legged in the tree house,

wide eyed with wonder,

and ruled the world.

The old people leaned out of their chairs,

and fanned themselves in the summer heat;

they spoke with hushed tones,

talked of the falling darkness, and

knew it was a long way down.

They left us alone.

And now we watch the latest generation lark around with all that vitality of you, while we sit in the shade fanning ourselves and muttering under our breath about that very youth and how everything is handed to them on a plate and how much its changed from the good old days, when we had nothing but were glad of all we truly had, like freedom and liberty and erm... well at least we weren't glued to our screens all the time and we ran everywhere. Now all that runs is the calender, flashing by at warp speed 5 as we wonder where all that time went. 😃

Why the small letters on the final line? I don’t get it. Nice story. It made me self-reflect. I have been isolating which has exacerbated my mental health problems. I have lost a lot of friends thru death, their moving away, divorce. I need to grab the vine and swing out into the community and find new friends, even if the possible emotional fall is 60 feet. Yeah, be brave, don’t grow up!

Good thing they left you alone... you wouldn't have listened anyway.... nice scene you've displayed here, very vivid images and memories of what we all dared to do as kids...as our parents sometimes watched in horror... went once with neighbor on a helicopter ride over my parent's pool, my mother nearly had a heart attack as we waved down at her.... NICE!!!
Warmly, B
