Once whole

I picked up a little leaf

floating in the rain swollen gutter

slowly down this deserted road

towards a large opening

 

A wide mouthed drain

swalloing everything in sight,

was pleading for more

to satisfy its voracious appetite

 

Falls leading to a cavernous abyss,

slipping between the cracks

of a heart which once was whole,

slamming to the rocks below

 

But this shivering little leaf

plucked from a raging torrent,

I placed in my pocket

where it was dry and warm

 

Because I do not want to drown alone

i like the metaphor...we don't want to drown alone, but we also feel that if we can save someone in some way, we have helped make the world a more beautiful place...with foliage that becomes a bit brighter.

Picking up the lost and putting them within the pockets of your heart...yet the sorrow remains, which resonates deeply within. Drowning in a torrent of emotions and chaos, I see the leaf swirling down a desolate current, yet it is saved by kindness. For kindness always has a saving grace, don't you think? I love your poetry Will, it is relateble in a melancholy way, yet there is always that sprig of hope nestled in the words and feelings it evokes. Well done, I enjoyed this write immensely.
