I wish that I had only been your friend

How do you get over someone you know you will never get over?

All I ever wanted was to be your friend

though things turned out much better I must say

I fell for you, your poetry, the smiles you'd send

I never will forget that wondrous day

 

The time we spent together was the special gift

and all that we did share was like a dream

Whenever I was down your voice it gave a lift

as you would use my shoulder just to lean

 

It seemed that we were perfect though so far apart

the miles in between were not a chore

I couldn't help but listen closely to my heart

and hoped that you would feel it all the more

 

Times they were not friendly, there is more I know

circumstances change the point of view

To make this short you said you thought we both should go

I never even dreamed of losing you

 

 And then it all came falling like an autumn leaf

It hurt, that's something I cannot pretend

And still that pain and emptiness gets no relief

I wish that I had only been your friend

 

because maybe we would still be...

know where you are coming from Will. Friendships that turn romantic can be as treacherous as sailing on the Titanic. That said, I can offer you this: what you want, might not be what you get, but in the end great poetry can be discovered washed up on shore beside you once you make land again.

Friendships seem so much less complicated than romantic relationships. It is nice when they both coincide but the duality often breaks one or the other. This poem made me sad and I have to reflect how much of that is from me and how much the poem itself. Well done Will

You are exactly right my friend. Friendships are gifts but when one turns romantic and the falls apart...I would have rather just remained friends. It happens I guess. Sorry this one held a meaning for you.
