Chapter One

“We’ve got a live one.”

The state trooper sat up in his seat, put the car in gear and sped off in the dark with the siren and lights flashing.

“How fast was she going Charlie?”

“I clocked her at eighty five miles per hour.”

The squad car raced forward in the darkness gaining on the brightening tail lamps. “The Mustang convertible?” Ralph asked.

“That’s her.”

The mustang turned on its right blinker and pulled over to the side of the road. The squad car pulled behind and several feet left of it. Both officers exited the squad car. State Trooper Ralph Green approached on the driver’s side of the vehicle. His partner, State Trooper Charles Woods approached on the passenger side. A twenty something female driver sat in the car motionless. She wore an undersized halter top and a pair of short shorts. Her dark hair blew wildly in the wind.

“Do you know why we pulled you over ma’am?” Ralph asked.

The girl turned her head quickly and Ralph saw her blue eyes matched his ex-wife’s.  “Oh no officer, I have no idea,” the girl replied.

“You were going 85 MPH in a 65 MPH zone.”

The girl smiled seductively. “I have always had a problem with moving too fast.” She shifted in the seat slowly, exposing more of her thigh. Ralph looked across to Charlie; his partner was suppressing a smile.

“License, registration and insurance please,” Ralph spoke the words coldly, harshly.

“Oh, ok officer. It’s in the glove box.” The girl leaned over and reached for the glove compartment. As she leaned over she exposed her red lace thong; Ralph got an unabridged view of it. He quickly looked away. At the same time the halter top was drawn several inches lower in the front and Charlie began what he thought was a covert examination of her breasts. While still leaning, the heavily endowed girl looked up at Charlie and smiled. He returned her smile eagerly. The young woman straightened back up slowly and scribbled something quickly. “Here you go,” she spoke as she handed the documents to Ralph.

Ralph examined the documents; she had scribbled her phone number on the insurance card. Ralph sighed; he couldn’t believe women still tried this stuff. He looked over at his partner who was visually analyzing the young woman from head to toe. That was the reason women still tried this stuff, Ralph thought.

Charlie spoke to the girl, completely under her spell. “It’s a little cold to have the top down on this thing isn’t it?”

“My tops have a problem with coming down on their own.” The girl replied as she pulled up on the halter top shifting her breast.

Ralph immediately walked away. “Wait here,” he said, but he never looked back. Charlie followed his partner reluctantly.

Back in the squad car, Ralph typed away on the police computer while Charlie talked to him with the energy of a fourteen year old virgin. “Oh my god, sometimes I love this job! That girl wants us,” Charlie bragged.

“No, that girl does not want a ticket,” Ralph replied.

“Who cares why she wants us. The point is that if we wanted, we could let her off with a warning and then escort her back to her place…to make sure she got home safely of course.”

“Stop it.”

“Then we would probably want to make sure her house was safe after arriving. You know, check for intruders.”

“If Michelle could hear you, she would leave and take the kids with her.”

Charlie smiled, “If only that were true. Let me tell you Ralph, your marriage ended early so you feel like you lost out on something. You never reached the stage that Michelle and I are at.”

“What stage is that?”

Charlie smiled again and pointed at the Mustang. “I’ll tell you about it on the way to her house.”

Ralph shook his head and smirked. He had finished writing the ticket and opened the door on the vehicle. “Wait here. I’ll be back in a moment. I don’t want you saying something that gets us both fired.”

Charlie laughed. “And I don’t want a partner that’s gay and doesn’t know it. But I guess that ship has sailed or should I say that mustang has driven away.”

Trooper Ralph green had handed the flirtatious woman her ticket and then walked away. He swears that he heard her call him an a*****e as she sped away. He told this to his partner, who listened closely and then laughed loudly.

“Well you are,” Charlie chuckled.

Ralph punched him in the arm, and then both men settled down in the dark squad car on the side of the road.

Charlie looked at the clock on the radio. “It’s midnight. One hour down, eleven to go,” he said.

Ralph leaned back in his seat. “Would you really cheat on Michelle?”

“Probably not. I mean, I have had opportunities but I have never actually cheated on her. I love her. It’s just that marriage and kids have a way of putting out the flame.”

“The flame was never a problem for us. It was the one thing the divorce lawyers left intact. Even months afterward, remnants of the flame was there. But I couldn’t be the person she deserved. I kept making mistake after mistake.”

“What happened with you and Beth happens to a lot of people. You were in different places in your lives.”

“I guess.”

“And how is Samantha by the way?” Charlie asked.

“She is good. Last week she opened her eyes while I was reading to her.”

“I thought the doctor told you that was nothing more than a muscle reflex.”

“But it seemed like this time was different. I went over and held her hand and talked to her for another hour.”

Charlie simply nodded.

“The facility raised their rates another twelve thousand a year. I will be doing over time indefinitely now.” The frustration in Ralph’s voice could not be concealed.

“Why not let your big shot brother pick up the difference?”

“He’ll pay six and I will pay six.”

“Ralph,” Charlie paused. “Don’t take this the wrong way. But your sister has been in a comma for a long time. The doctors say that she will never wake up. Maybe you should consider just bringing her home.”

“She gets the best care there, Charlie.”

“But look at how much that place is costing you, and I don’t just mean the money.” Charlie counted on his fingers. “It cost you a marriage to a wonderful woman. It’s costing you a social life; you spend every free moment there with her…”

Ralph cut off Charlie. “If you keep going, it looks like it might cost me a friendship with my partner.”

“Like I said in the beginning, don’t take this the wrong way. I only mention it because I care.”

Ralph sighed. “I know you do. And I realize that Samantha has been sick a long time, but she has been my sister even longer. Charlie, I am all that she has. I talk to her because if I didn’t, who would?

“Your point is made.” Charlie patted Ralph on the shoulder. “You are a good brother and there is nothing wrong with that.”

“The doctors never found what was wrong with her. She is going to wake up one day; I know it.”

“Ralph you can’t…”

“And I will be there to see it.”

There was a long silence in the car. Charlie looked at the clock on the radio again. “Ten hours and forty five minutes left,” he said.
