Thorns and Briers

Thorns and Briers

When the sun sifts through the trees
And the clouds float gray above
Shadows in the whispering leaves
Seem to cry teardrops of love

Teardrops that seem to fade away
Upon the cold and mossy stone
Though the tide may turn away
Still a heart beat's all alone

Yet within the rose’s bouquet you hide
Among thorns and briers pain
And while the other flowers cried
You withstood the haunting rain

Like a ghost that glimmers on and on
In misted shadows as they bind
You to darkness, though never gone
Your dreams you cannot find

So let me be your guiding star
To open wide your weary eyes
With a soft light from afar
To awaken loves fireflies

And on a gentle fiery wing
Through the darkness speak my name
And to you I will joyfully bring
My heart as a loyal flame

For eternity and all time
Never faltered by storm or breeze
Please let your love be lost in mine
When the sun sifts through the trees.
