A Riddle for you

Can you figure it out?

It's tall, it's skinny

It's short, it's fat

It holds life and knowledge,

And homes as well

It eats and drinks,

From deep within

It sheds a layer and grows it back

In the shade it knows what's said

Showing proof of things unseen

Usually hiding in beautiful scenes

Are you stumped?
