It’s crazy how the mind perceives your day, making up bizarre stories to try to understand what had happened  better. Mine creates the most deranged s**t when it comes to dreams. So when I dreamt that night, about that talking, wild rabbit covered in blood; I didn’t question it. I ran after him when I recognized he was carrying the same pocketwatch that mini-me was holding. I never liked rabbits. I found their beady, unblinking eyes and unpredictable behavior unsettling. They are even more chilling when they’re stained in blood. But as disturbing as the rabbit looked, I felt the overwhelming need to chase after it.

I come to a halt. I see the rabbit disappear down a rabbit hole, little bloody footprints leading up to it. Gazing down, it didn’t appear to be too deep. Large signs hung above it, the words blurry and hard to read. “Nothing is real here”, “This is just a dream”, and “Nothing can hurt you”. The woods around me began to close in, faster and faster. Taking in a deep breath, I jump in after the rabbit before I can talk myself out of it.

I usually have a huge fear of heights, but as I slide further down the seemingly bottomless hole, I feel nothing but carefree and bewilderment. I slide through the bends like a child on a slide, watching as my surroundings slowly turn upside down. Cupboards and shelves fall around me in slow motion, and I spot my Hello Kitty clock, still stuck at 12:30.

In the chaos, I hear a child’s voice echo through the tunnel, so quiet I can barely hear her. “There’s no going back to yesterday because back then, I was a different person.” I sit up straighter, looking around for the little girl.

“Hello?” I call, but I hear no response. Sitting back, I try convincing myself that it was all in my head. I close my eyes, trying to enjoy the rest of the fall. But I couldn’t help but wonder what that meant. How could you be a different person in a span of one day? Little did I know, I would figure that out soon enough.
