Shark Beach

Not to return, she left her pail

upon the glistening sand, then

crashed into the surging break,

and all its dazzling spray.

When hearing father's voice call out,

she struggles for the shore. 

But riptide bound, she finds herself 

pulled to the coral edges. Where sharks

do dwell and paint the foam far from 

her sandy blanket, while seabirds 

circling o're the fray, bear witness to

her summer's day.

Now, this is a bloody good poem! a delightful, cautionary tale.
Funny, though, I grew up in Florida, and lived in the sea, but never once saw a shark... I mean, I've caught a few, mostly small ones, and don't recall anyone being bitten anywhere near the places I swam and fished. Then I was in a bait shop with an aerial shot where a bunch of oblivious people swimming and surfing surrounded by sharks everywhere...

I grew up on Long Island Sound. Misquamicut Beach in Rhode Island served up some nasty undertow, as I remember it.
