I Remember

I remember screaming "don't go"
as you took the pieces in your hands
to grind to dust.

I remember a vague pain in my chest
where those pieces belonged
where they should have stayed
but the pain wasn't enough
to keep me from screaming
"don't go."

I remember reaching
my hands out to you
in a desperate attempt to remind you
that I am human
and I needed someone like you
to show you
I wanted you to stay

I remember waking up
from this dream
and realizing
you were already gone.
