Pretending

She had to pretend it didn't hurt.

She had to pretend she wasn't breaking.

She had to pretend she didn't care.

She had to pretend she knew they were joking.

She had to pretend she wasn't about to cry.

She had to pretend she didn't have scars on her wrists.

She had to pretend she didn't think of suicide.

She had to pretend everything was okay.

And everyone believed her.

The pressure to perform - to be the same way all the time can be enormous. People fear what they don't know - what they can't put into a box - what they can't stick a label on and so, creative impulsive people must comply and pretend or be themselves and accept that they may never have friends (the complying and labelling type of friends).

This resonates with me adyost.

WOW, love this. What emotion with a repetitive stanza. While this is about suicide, I can relate on a different level/subject. Hiding your emotions and pretending and having everyone believe you. Sad and lonely place to live. Great writing
