Infidelity: Part III- A Husband's Defense

Ah, my darling! My love and my life!

It was a fatal error when I cheated on my wife.

To you I have sinned; I broke our marriage vow.

I’m sure that my soul is rotting somewhere now.

 

But please, sweet one, allow me to explain

The uncensored predicaments of a husband long in pain.

I love you, you know that, and that won’t change a bit.

Yet you always take notice of my every misfit.

 

My silence is misunderstood as lacking interest.

My opinions do not matter--you think you know what’s best.

My failures and my weaknesses are all that you can see.

That caused me to wonder if it’s worth loving me.

 

There was another woman who was so unlike you.

She told me all my good things--the ones you never knew.

I wanted to be wanted and she gave me what you lack.

It was a sinful pleasure but I kept coming back.

 

It was a stupid act, I know, and forgiveness I implore

Though I will try to understand if you love me no more.

But, darling, please…with heaven’s aid, give us another start.

Recall our wedding promise--‘til death do us part.

I wrote this shortly after the first two parts (A Wife's Fury and A Wife's Frustrations) but I was hesitant to have this published. The theme is rather controversial but my poems do not necessarily reflect my personal view. The content of the series was influenced by what I've seen in movies or by what I've read in books.

This was great, I love the message, the idea you've portrayed here! Such a current issue, isnt it? The pleading for the returned love, the forgiven mistakes, you've captured it all in this piece, yet again you inspire me! this was a great write!

The man in this piece employed all the psychological means to get the wife's forgiveness: admitting his fault (only because he was caught), declaring his love to the wife, acting as if he is the victim (he mentioned that his wife lacks something) and invoking the sanctity of their marriage vows. Truly the man is not only full of promises but he is likewise an emotional manipulator. I read Sir Jacob's review and i totally agree with him.

Well, it does indeed sound like a guilty husband and he uses the usual pathetic excuses. His silence is also an indication that he is not communicating his frustrations with his wife. What is interesting is the typical 'maleness' of this piece. I was unhappy, I felt you didn't love me/ I found a woman who said I was wonderful/ We had sex/ I got caught/ Now (though I just said you don't love me) I don't want to lose you and / I want a second chance.

Blue, I think you honestly captured the fractured logic of a hormone driven male. Good job.

Clever you to write as a man, almost tongue in cheek in the reading though not meant that way by the actual perpetrator! Guess it could equally be written by a woman - a wife, under same circumstances. Although not intended perhaps, methinks there are truths told in this as well as excuses. Fine metre, fine phrasing - you're a pleasure to read.
