to be youA Poem by Ro AlbaYou know the boy who hides from eyes Very well, because you know you have been The boy who hides from eyes Because you cannot stand what reflects in them That twin of yourself who hides in the pupil More beautiful than you You could not possibly live up to him You are old But he is young and bright And your mother’s favourite Your father’s right hand man And you stand beside With the left side of your right hand grazed From where you slammed it into a wall Or a person, flesh on flesh Your twin despises you, you think Because he is perception, reality skewed And you have bags under your eyes While his are concealed And your teeth haven’t been brushed And your bed is covered In coffee mugs that spill coffee dregs And scraps of paper that you believed could be beautiful in the midnight Your twin is you, and you hate him for it And you love him, and wish you could’ve been him And that he could’ve been you So that he might feel the burning, ugly, detestable thing in your chest. © 2025 Ro Alba |
