Okay For Today

Okay For Today

A Poem by Alene Parr

“How is your heart today?”

She said and smiled

Because I answered,

“It’s okay.”

Because it was

Okay

Today.

Some days it isn’t.

But for now it feels

All right.

It isn’t sinking

Isn’t drowning

In whatever fills my chest

In the morning

After dreams.

It isn’t coated in the heavy lead

I wake up with sometimes.

“How is my heart?”

I think.

I feel it beat.

It’s in there,

And that’s good enough

For me

Today.

Because it’s fine.

It’s just okay

For today.

Alene, I love this poem- it is so honest and elegant and well written. I can relate to this poem so well, having just emerged from two of the most painful years of my life. I find myself asking my heart those very same questions every morning.
