Okay For Today

“How is your heart today?”

She said and smiled

Because I answered,

“It’s okay.”

Because it was

Okay

Today.

Some days it isn’t.

 

But for now it feels

All right.

It isn’t sinking

Isn’t drowning

In whatever fills my chest

In the morning

After dreams.

It isn’t coated in the heavy lead

I wake up with sometimes.

 

“How is my heart?”

I think.

I feel it beat.

It’s in there,

And that’s good enough

For me

Today.

Because it’s fine.

It’s just okay

For today.
