Three in a Car

Three in a Car

A Poem by Laz K.

Tighter than the flat coils of

Safety belts on our chest,

A feeling of unease grabs

Our throats.

Eyes fixed on the road,

We watch the occasional cyclist

As if the smooth helmet, or

The curved handlebar were

Never-before-seen marvels.

"Jumping Deer! Drive with Care!"

The road sign is not a warning,

But a sliver of hope:

Something might crash into us and

Break the icy grip of silence.

There are comfortable silences and then there are ones like this find us crashing into awkwardness.
The cyclist has comfortable silence...no pressure to converse.
