The First Lovers Upon Mars

Your impatient eyes utter all that my heart dares not speak aloud.
It is as though thought itself passes between us"silent and unbidden"
a kind of telepathy that needs no language.

We stand not between rock and hard place.
but within something far more unkind"
a space ungenerous, closing in,
where tenderness is made to wither.
Here, love grows frail;
it cannot take root in such barren air.

This place is no sanctuary.
It was never meant for us.

Come"let us depart.
Let us run from this without a backward glance.
For what binds us is not of this weary ground.

And I shall be"if thou wilt"
thy companion in flight, thy equal in escape.
Together, we shall forsake this world that starves us.

We shall be the first lovers upon Mars.
unburdened by the weight of all we leave behind.
There, we begin anew"
a quiet revolution of two souls,
an exodus without witness.

We come as we are, unadorned, unashamed.
And in that distant red silence,
Perhaps love shall at last find breath.
