A tour of the mind.

A tour of the mind.

A Poem by andrew mitchell

Okay new thoughts!
Gather around please.
I, King thought
will be your guide
taking you all on
a memorable tour
of the mind.

Okay! Follow me please!
And remember stay close,
you could get lost.
Down this corridor
we have the cerebral cortex -
an area of complex thoughts.

Over in the temporal department
we process sound and language.
The parietal lobe deals with orientation
and navigation.

Up ahead central
lies the restricted zone
namely the hypothalamus.
You will hear the hum
of cries and happiness.
This place relays sensory
and motor signals regulating
consciousness, sleep and alertness.

To the cerebellum
we have the engine room
co coordinating motor control.

Of course, we have the sub branches
like the teaching room
where along the walls
are stored intelligence
commonly called wisdom.
You may even get a glimpse
of common sense, rare indeed.

First on the left
along the corridor
we have wall to wall lockers
containing memories.
Take care on opening
some hold back many a flood of tears,
while others will have you
falling back in laughter.

First on your right
holds the door to many a dreams
and nightmares collected through
the carousels of time.

Second, third and fourth rooms
have an assortment of emotions,
ideas, dreams which have never ventured
or seen the light of day.
Sex seems to be the theme
on most of them
which can transfer intelligence to organs
acting without proper authorisation.

Floating lost in the portals of mind
against the travels of time
are fond memories which
knock on door number five
begging you to come in.
Be careful you may get lost
in one's life expectancy trapped
which could seem like forever.
They have this pointless craving
for reliving a special moment.

Finally, moving on
at the back of the mind
is unused space as much
as sixty percent I'm told.
This will be your new home
so you can prosper and develop.

So thoughts, when do you wish to move in?
Discuss it amongst yourselves
but don't dilly dally
real estate of the mind
is a lifetime opportunity only.
When its gone its gone!
And we don't want dementia moving in, do we?

Okay! Have a wander, watch the signs
and please enjoy the elevator music.
Its just a whistle of a tune
that goes round and round
in the mind driving everyone crazy.

One other thing silence
moves in mysterious ways
beware of thoughts in a drug induced state
or locked permanently in the world of day dreaming.

Ah, well, Dante had Virgil at least. Pretty certain nobody wants inside my mind any more than a free trip through the Inferno. But, I can now safely download the experience via poetry. An entertaining write, F.

Indeed John, thank you for stopping by and commenting, much appreciated.
compartmentalized parts of the mind...very creative tour you take us on...
and I would have liked to get the whole tour, but in the third stanza my thoughts strayed, I went down a different hallway and couldn't get back to the group...i called and called but no answer.
felt i was in a maze, scared...like i was crazy....losing it...and then realized, wait no, actually i stayed with the group all along and we were in the next to the last stanza...
teaches me to daydream.
