Well look a here! Two old flames

Well look a here! Two old flames

A Poem by andrew mitchell

There was no fire
the fire had just
gone out.

When will it come back?
I have no idea.

Where’s a new flame
when you need one?

Did the wood
allow me to
pick it up
when it asked
Have you got a match?

Old flames and
pick up lines
while the candle
burning oh so bright
looks on alone
in the dark
making shadows
dance across the wall.

When will the fire come back?
When it’s happy with
the fireplace.
You know … ashes to ashes
and all that is burnt.

I see the light!
No you see the candle.
Can’t afford electricity
Lights out!

I have a match, cries she!
Now, we just need to gather up some tinder and start a nice fire for you.
If there is life, there is latent fire. There are embers. You may have to fan them wildly but it can happen.
On the other hand, I do not mind sitting in a dark room, imagining and remembering- or, maybe that IS fanning a flame

The opening stanzas brought me back to the great bushfires that meet from differing directions and Elvis flew in to aid an entire nation. The mental image then melting into the old flame of past connection wanting for a spark or fuel, or both. The last stanza is bonza! Ending with a thought of something akin to Mathau and Lemmon, even, in Grumpy Old Men or a Garbo and Gable flick, or Streep and even Katharine Hepburn. Good stuff.
