A leap of faith

A leap of faith

A Poem by andrew mitchell

In a leap of faith
kicking the chair
the cross bearing chains
around his neck
weigh heavily
his burden
until death
his soul released
above the beam
the rope lies still.

A leap of faithlessness, maybe. No faith in possible happiness. No faith in possible contentment, at least, if not excitement and joy. I have thought a great deal about suicide- not for me, i am too stubborn and hopeful and cheerful, not good material. But both of my father's grandfathers committed suicide. It makes me ache to think of them alone and so sad that it came to that. I will never give up trying to reach them with my heart and mind.

"Cross bearing chains...." makes me wonder just what exactly was the burden he bore. Most cross bearing types are known for getting up to no good. This made me think of that scene in "The Shawshank Redemption" where Brooks Hatlin takes his own leap of faith where he found prison life more acceptable than the freedom he was given after 50 years. The title is very clever, Andrew. It's a leap of faith not many would take. Nice to read your clever thoughts here again, my friend. I hope you are gearing up for a snake warring Summer in the Adelaide hills!
