“The Fun they Had” / Skipping Class

A narrative "poem" reflecting on the past, title inspired/stolen from "The Fun They Had" by Isaac Asimov

 

I don’t know why I thought it would be cool

To be locked inside a locker instead of going to gym,

But I did, and it wasn’t.

 

I don’t know why I thought it would be funny

To soak my best friend’s shoes in water

After she changed into sneakers for gym class,

But she didn’t, and I was called into the office.

 

I don’t know why I thought it was clever

To skip science class, and knock on the window

To encourage my friends to do the same,

But they didn’t- and they passed. 

 

And I really don’t know why

I gave my pack of matches

To a friend who wanted to show me a trick,

About how to set a roll of paper towels ablaze,

That set the school on fire.

Some things we do for fun are not thought through first...and then we pay consequences...as smiles turn to tears and then fears of what will happen next.
