“The Fun they Had” / Skipping ClassA Poem by Amanda ReneeA narrative "poem" reflecting on the past, title inspired/stolen from "The Fun They Had" by Isaac AsimovI don’t know why I thought it would be cool To be locked inside a locker instead of going to gym, But I did, and it wasn’t. I don’t know why I thought it would be funny To soak my best friend’s shoes in water After she changed into sneakers for gym class, But she didn’t, and I was called into the office. I don’t know why I thought it was clever To skip science class, and knock on the window To encourage my friends to do the same, But they didn’t- and they passed. And I really don’t know why I gave my pack of matches To a friend who wanted to show me a trick, About how to set a roll of paper towels ablaze, That set the school on fire. © 2025 Amanda Renee |
