The Reality They Hide

The Reality They Hide

A Poem by ananyayaya

When you meet them for the first time,
"they feel like home"
your happy place, your comfort zone.
So warm, so perfect… almost too good.

At first, they’ll be there in all your laughter,
walking beside you like they’d never leave.
But as time passes…
“Oh... do we know each other?”
Their memory fades when your use does.

They’ll laugh with you
but the moment you turn around,
they spit poison with someone else.
Bad-mouthing you like a sport,
disguised in whispers and wicked smiles.

To your face:
“You’re so pretty, so graceful, so kind.”
To others:
“She’s so fake, so creepy " avoid her.”

And when I hear these things,
I freeze.
My God... what is this?
I used to believe humans were the sweetest species.
But now I know
they always find a way
to puzzle you, confuse you, break you.

You never truly know who they are.
With you they’re light.
Behind you they’re shadows.

In a world full of masks and mirrors,
only a rare few
are real.

Most people suffer from an undiagnosed or a barely sub clinical personality disorder. Social media has unmasked this in a way that I think might be leading toward romantic nihilism. The golden age of hooking up online has passed... now it's just, disconnected from reality. Might as well JO. It's cheaper.

It captures that sinking feeling of betrayal with clarity and hurt, without sounding bitter. The shift from warmth to coldness is powerful.
