i've truly never understood

the civil war

the hatreds the deaths

the sufferings

of all

i was taught 

it was about

states rights

that was the lie

i witnessed the lies

i lived amongst

the hatreds of one race 

against all others

against those i had grown up with

against those i had learned life with

now the division is far beyond 

what one would think possible

man can hate others

man can kill others

just because

i now know

how divisions can pit 

brother against brother

how there will never

be peace between them

i don't just have hate

in my heart

but angers upon angers

for those i once claimed

as my siblings
