Finally Free

Finally Free

A Poem by Briana O'Connor
"

A poem about my battle from an active drunk to a recovering, spiritual being.

"

A love insincere,

I felt it...

When you were near.

You held me so tightly,

A grip..

Most frightening.

I clawed at your hands,

Attempted...

To resist your demands.

I longed to break free,

To be rid of misery.

Alas...

A breeze reached my soul.

Inspiring me...

To fight your control.

Diagnosed with Alcoholism...

Providing a key...

An escape...

From your narcissism.

A love surrounding me...

I listened to the herd.

Experience, strength and hope...

Lingered in every word.

Hopeless no more,

I chose another door.

I walked through it with hope,

Sent my sins away...

In an envelope

Recovery...

Has set me free.

Allowing me…

To just sit back and be.

One day at a time,

I'm not afraid of the climb.

“Let go and let God”...

Joining the rest of the squad.

Together we stand,

Forever in God’s command.

Powerful and good words.
"To just sit back and be.

I'm not afraid of the climb.
“Let go and let God”..."
I agree. One day at a time to find proper place and we need faith and good friend to make the journey happen. Thank you for sharing the excellent poetry.

This was cool. At first I thought it might be an abusive relationship, but it turned out to be a different kind of abusive relationship than what I expected. I like how you personified alcohol, and it is admirable that you were able to break free from such a prison. Both of my parents are in AA, and it really saved their lives.

Breaking free of the chains that bind us, whether it's addiction or situations, is the most difficult of gates to scale on the road of life.
