The One Who Leaves

Told from the one who cannot stay in the relationship any longer.

I know you don’t want me to go

It hurts me to cause you this pain by leaving

We have a such long history together

But the essence of true love

    for me towards you has always been missing

And you know that

 

I fear your anger at this

Your rage that I could do this to you

But we are both growing old

    and I want the chance to be wholly fulfilled

I want this for you as well

    and if we stay together, it will never happen

 

I know you embraced your hopes

    that we would grow old together

That my heart would be opened

    to accept your love, as you would have it

So I tried but it is not within me

And never will be

 

If you love me as you say you do

    you would want me to be happy

I know you would rather I be content with you

And I know you think everything would be all right

    if I just gave you what you need

But I can’t

 

I want you to be happy and give you the chance

    to find the person who loves you completely

Instead of only with a part of their heart

    as I have

I imagine, after all these years

    you think I owe it to you to stay

But it is a debt that would be paid

    with the remaining time I have left

And time cannot be regained

So I have to leave you now

I am so very sorry
