Selfish

Selfish

A Poem by E
"

This helped me deal with having selfish parents

"

It is not selfish to mourn yourself,

It is not selfish to ask to be treated how you deserve,

It is not selfish to expect to be safe,

To expect to be cared for, to expect to be loved.

It is not selfish for a child to want her parents,

It is not selfish for a child to want a family,

It is not selfish for a child to want to be a priority,

It was not selfish for me to expect you to be a parent.

It was not selfish for me to expect to be loved,

To expect to be cared for, to expect to be safe.

I was not being selfish, I was not asking for too much,

You were being selfish,

You had a child and put your needs above theirs,

You were selfish,

You should have loved me unconditionally,

You should have cared for me, I should have felt safe.

I should not be put second to your selfish desires.

I should have been put first.

But I wasn’t.
