Union St.

Union St.

A Poem by Alexandra

Don't ask me again why the sunflowers refuse to grow on your side of the lawn anymore
It's easy to say that things haven't been going your way lately
& it's hard to say things are just the same for me

Consistently yanking weeds to maintain the appeal
I'm exhausted in attempting to provide life in this barren field
No love left to nurture
No efficacy in doing my best to provide care

What the f**k have you been doing this entire time?
Did you just turn a blind eye or did I try too hard in looking for signs of life?
You keep asking questions about sunflowers that haven't grown since last July
And I keep exerting all energy into one that wants to die

So, why are the sunflowers not growing on my side anymore?

I find this poem absolutely uncanny in its ability to reach me as a reader based on the events in my life that I can (and do) very easily relate to while reading. I, too, wonder why there are no sunflowers on my side anymore after all the weed-pulling and care, while the other side did nothing. Simple story told that can relate to so many situations in a complex way, I love it.
