Roxi's mountain

Roxi's mountain

A Story by ben

Be here before sunrise if you want to save Jane. He’s here. So, where are you? Having a drag off his cigarette, Benny looks over to Vincent and says, “You would think someone would be here.”

“Hey, I hate to say it, but this doesn’t look good. Sorry, man.”

Flicking the ash away and holding off from having a drag, Benny steps away from the front of the rig and walks towards the barricade. Starting after him, Vincent stops long enough to pick up a fallen branch which turns out to be the perfect height for a walking stick. Once alongside Benny, out comes a pocketknife and with years of whittling under his belt, the nubs go first before he strips away the bark. Admiring his quick handiwork, Vincent tests its strength by pounding both ends into the ground and pleased with the results, says to Benny, “The sky’s turning.”

And yet no one has shown up. Focusing on the smoke rising up from the cigarette held between his fingers, the thought of being able to save Jane takes a turn to the painful realization of this not happening. Troubled by this, Benny says, “Give me a minute.” There is no mistaking the pain in his friend’s voice and having no soothing words to offer, Vincent keeps quiet all the while thinking who would do such a thing.
