artificial flower

artificial flower

A Poem by Beren

I left all my notebooks on a Greek island when I moved.
I don't want to write poetry anymore.
I don't want to heal either.
I've also given up trying to save Plath.

I have no more ashes to be a phoenix.
I have no more soil so you could be a worm and gnaw at my flesh.
I have no more words to say to sing you songs.
I have no more love..

I was a flower that would never fade in any weather,
But I sat on the edge of hell.
When the night fell for 90 days,
And you came to warm your hands in winter,
I was trying to heal the burn marks the summer left on me.

When the sun was no longer good for me.
When there was no home left for me in the Balkans.
I had to try to clear my mind with cold water.

I was digesting everything that happened.
Only truth belongs in what happened.

So, long story short,
You don't even have a single torn out leaf in my heart's garden anymore.

The opening moved me so much and the mention of no more ashes to be a phoenix just blew me away! None of my notebooks survived and I moved around a lot. And all the places I lived at are no longer as well. One day internet poetry will also drift into digital abyss... and here I am swimming in it while I still can. Powerful read.

Beren, this piece moved me deeply. It reads like a quiet reckoning -- raw, weary, and honest.

The image of the flower that "would never fade" yet sits "on the edge of hell" struck me especially -- it captures the kind of strength that comes only after surrender.

There’s so much truth in this letting go; it feels like its own kind of healing.

I have often wondered why artificial flowers are deemed vulgar and offensive to give when nothing dies and apart from the odd dust once a month, will last forever.
Maybe this is just a guys point of view but at the first sign of love something has to die.
I like your "giving up on saving Plath", which is almost blasphemy in the poetic world, but I totally get that too. How can we save anyone when saving ourselves seems impossible?

Heavily impacted by that last killer line. That’s putting the record straight.

And you came to warm your hands in winter - fabulous

A dark poem Beren but so well crafted.

Everything seems artificial to you now, like a flower that would never wilt.....your words are sorrowful, depressed, anxious...trying to heal..."I have no more love" really sums up your mood.... which I think is very dark....The last line is the most telling in this mournful piece.... excellently written Beren...

Sylvia had her demons to fight, and isn't it ironic that it was only after her passing did she come alive. But alive she is and "saved" by all those who come to know her through her writings. But, honestly, there is a hole in the universe caused by her leaving. Yes, my friend, truth does
"belong to what happened," and sometimes that truth is hard to digest, hard to even imagine, because it is not what was wanted or needed.

I disagree, this poem is not represented by an "artificial flower", nor is the poet who wrote it. It's more like a Tulip, whose heart soil nourishes it and gives it colors. Colors that translate into poetry. Even in this poem, whose sadness proclaims it will never "heal" or "write" again, reveals a heart's garden filled with real flowers.

It's a wonderful poem, Beren and it deserves the praise the 2 poets below me gave it (Neville and Jacob). I am glad you wrote it and shared it.
