RF: I'm listening to the song belong on repeat as I write this. :3 I LOVE IT! ♥ Suddenly I know I'm not sleeping... Hello I'm still here All that's left of yesterday... - Hello by Evanescence The sun hadn't quite risen yet by the time Sparrow's eyes shot open that morning. He had a dream that night, of things that he could barely remember anymore. All that he remembered from the dream was suddenly being in a strange and unfamiliar part of the forest, which looked slightly like his pack territory, but definitely wasn't. He looked up into the sky, and saw something glowing from far away, walking up towards it in curiosity. Suddenly, he was hit from behind by something, and, as he fell forward, his eyes shot open. That was all that Sparrow remembered, although there was definitely more to the dream that he had simply forgotten for reasons unknown. He didn't know where he was for a few minor seconds, but then looked to his left and saw the familiar ginger she-wolf. It was Sunset, who was still asleep, her chest heaving and her breathing heavier than usual. Sparrow narrowed his eyes skeptically, wondering if she was having a nightmare. Suddenly, Sunset's ear twitched, and her eyes shot open, although Sparrow couldn't see that part of it. She was panting as soon as she woke up, and she stood cautiously, shaking the dirt off of herself as if it was nothing. Sparrow looked at her quizzically, and she bit her lower lip. "...Nothing," Sunset said quickly, glancing at the ground for a moment. She then realized that, to her disgust, she was still in the hunter's trap that she had been in hours before. "I... just had a strange dream." Sparrow cocked his head to the side. "That's not nothing, Sunset. But... really? So did I." "...You did?" Sunset asked quietly. "Yes," Sparrow said. "...I was in some part of the forest that looked like our territory, but I could tell that it wasn't. And I saw this strange light, and something attacked me from behind, and when I fell, I woke up." Sunset looked surprised. "...That's what I dreamed of, sort of," she said, still looking confused. "I was in the same part of the forest, and I saw a glow in the trees. I started to chase it, but it kept floating away as soon as I came near, and I heard something following me. Then, I woke up." "...That's really weird," Sparrow said, standing up and stretching. He yawned. "I wonder where Opaque and everyone is... I hope they're coming back soon." ~ ~ ~ "WHAT IF THEY'RE HURT?!" Hurricane rolled his eyes after hearing his mate's frantic cry. She had been doing that all morning, and it was still fairly early. "Opaque, don't worry," he said rather flatly, glancing at the ground. "I'm sure that they're okay, because the hunter was no where in sight last night." "Yes, but that was last night," Opaque pointed out, her voice now hoarse from yelling as much as she had just that morning. "I hate myself for leaving them," she muttered, shaking her head in dismay. "I feel so stupid..." "Don't," Sapphire said quickly, looking at Opaque with sympathy. "You have no reason to worry - I'm pretty sure that Sparrow and Sunset can defend themselves even if trouble arises." "That doesn't matter," Opaque hissed, panting. "We shouldn't have left them, because the hunter has to come back at some point to the trap." "That may not be true," Sapphire said. "Please, just don't worry. Why don't we just...?" She paused, never finishing her sentence, because she was unsure of what they should do at this point. Sparrow had given them a task to do, and she wanted to finish it, but she knew that the rest of the pack would disagree. "I have a suggestion," Hurricane said, interrupting Sapphire's thoughts crudely. "Why don't we just forget about finding a place to stay for now, and we head back to the hole? I can tell that Opaque wants us to go back." "I agree," Opaque said quickly, and the pack began their journey to find their way back. ~ ~ ~ Sunset sighed as she realized, for the millionth time, how pathetic Sparrow was, especially at this current moment. The black wolf was busy digging away in the side of the hole, and Sunset watched awkwardly as he sighed in relief and attempted to climb through it. "Um, Sparrow," Sunset said, not taking her eyes off of the hole, "that's not going to work." Sparrow peered out of the hole in annoyance, his eyes narrowed. "And your point is?" "...How do you expect it to work?" Sunset asked him flatly. "I don't," Sparrow said, and he continued digging, ignoring Sunset's exasperated sigh. ~ ~ ~ Hurricane was continuing to run ahead as the pack attempted to remember where the hunter's trap was located. Apparently, they were going in the wrong direction at first, but that had changed after Hurricane obtained his sense of direction. Suddenly, Hurricane stopped, causing several wolves to collide with him, but the dark grey wolf ignored them surprisingly. Then, he sniffed the air, and got a concerned look on his face. "...Grizzly bear," he told the pack. Oh my. What if the bear finds Sparrow and Sunset...? But wait... They're in a hole... What if the bear jumps in the hole? It will kill them. But it wouldn't be able to get out. And they could have figured out how to get out... If that's possible... Thoughts were swimming around in Opaque's head at a million miles an hour, but she ignored them all and stared at her mate blankly. No one spoke. Sapphire seemed unconcerned. "Like I said, I think that Sparrow and Sunset are safe. Any bear in their right mind wouldn't dive into a hunter's trap just to kill something." "I was worried about us, too!" Opaque snarled. "What if it finds us?" "We're in a group, so we should be safe," Hurricane said, and the pack sighed in relief. "We should probably keep on going, though." The roar of a bear echoed over the trees, sending the entire pack running for their lives again. ~ ~ ~ Meanwhile, Sparrow had finally given up on digging himself out of the hole, and was now sitting with a blank expression on his face. He was staring at the ground, counting the number of minutes as they passed by, waiting for Sunset to say something. One. Two. Three. Four. Five. Six. She was still silent. "Um, Sunset?" Sparrow was the one who ended up breaking up the silence, curious about something. "...How exactly do you know that Hurricane's family is alive?" Sunset appeared stunned by the question. "...I can just tell," she replied. Sparrow didn't reply. Instead, he was completely silent. "Um, Spar-" "Shh," Sparrow snarled, and his ears pricked up. "I hear... footsteps." Sunset's eyes widened. She recognized the sound of the footsteps, and it definitely wasn't wolf. Or bear. A rugged old hunter appeared at the top of the hole, clearly not expecting what he was about to see. His bloodshot eyes widened, and he knelt down over top of the hole, looking curiously down at the two wolves inside of his trap, which was met for deer. Sparrow didn't move, so Sunset decided not to either. She just stared up at the hunter, who shakily reached behind his back and into his backpack. She heard a strange clicking noise, and frowned, as the hunter was pulling something out of his backpack. That wasn't a normal noise for a gun to make, so she wasn't sure anymore what he had taken out of his bag. The hunter raised the tranquilizer gun with shaking hands, clearly not wanting to kill the wolves. He didn't mean to trap wolves, anyway - he had simply wanted a deer. Trapping wolves was not part of his plan. He pointed the tranquilizer to the black wolf first, and fired. Sparrow yelped as soon as he felt the needle-sharp tip of the dart pierce his flesh. He hit the ground hard, and was knocked unconscious instantly. Not sure what was going on, Sunset now decided that she was going to have to be threatening. She growled menacingly up at the hunter and let out a fierce bark, but the hunter fired at her as well. That was the last thing she remembered. ~ ~ ~ As soon as Hurricane stepped up to the hole, he knew something was wrong. Sparrow and Sunset were lying, still unconscious, outside of the hole. Hurricane wasn't sure how they had gotten out of the hole, until Sapphire spoke. "...I smell human here," she said thickly. Even Hurricane appeared concerned. "Well," he said stiffly, "it doesn't appear that either of them are hurt, but I'm not sure." "The hunter's gone, but... Wait," Opaque said. "There's a dart in Sparrow's front leg." She was correct. The dart still remained in Sparrow's leg, but no one dared to touch him. Sunset had no dart in her anymore, as if hers had been removed by the hunter who shot her with it. Suddenly, the ginger she-wolf stirred, opening one eye lazily. Sparrow did the same, sitting up quickly and his attention immediately going to the dart in his leg. "Um," he said, "...what is that?" "It's a dart," Hurricane said flatly. "It's stuck in your leg. Hunters have been here, and Sunset's is gone." "I have no idea what you're talking about," Sunset cut in. "All I remember is waking up, and my leg kinda of stings a bit, but I'm not sure why..." "You shouldn't be very concerned," Hurricane told them. "Sparrow, Sunset is fine, and you appear to be fine, although the dart is still in your leg." "I'll get it out," Sparrow said, and he gripped the dart with his teeth, pulling it quickly out of his leg. He gasped as he saw the needle-sharp point of the dart, dropping it on the ground and looking down into the hole. "Did you all find a place for us to stay?" Sparrow asked suddenly, his "eyebrows" raising. Opaque winced. © 2012 master squigglesAuthor's Note
