Let The Flames Begin

A Poem by caitlinrosecyr

I think the flames began to die

before we had noticed

the smoke,

contorting in ways that

I was never able to

get familiar with


I think we had

turned to dust

before we realized

that fire burns lazily,

we shouldn’t have burned

out so quickly

into black and grey

ash


I think it’s a lie when people say

“the brightest flame burns fastest”

because I was never really bright

I was always the most

wilted shade

of dull.


I think it’s terrifying

that we could never burn bright

even though we tried like

hell

even though we knew

it was right


Once upon a time

we would have never

allowed ourselves

to burn so quickly

And I think it’s

about time that

I adopt that mentality

again so;

let the flames

begin
