Goldenrods

A Poem by Carissa Marie

Goldenrod, like the color of the sunset-
You whom I have taken for granted; 
You with the immaculate beauty, 
And the scent whom I adore- 
But I cannot show. 
 You have made a mark upon me, 
Like the thorns of those roses, 
Whose beauty I have revered. 
I have chosen daffodils, over you. 
I have chosen lilies, and daisies, 
And all those beautiful flowers that girls loved, 
But never you. 
Those flowers I have worshiped, 
Those beauty I have treasured, 
None of them compares to you -
And yet, not one look upon you I have spared.
I have touched a thousand flowers, 
I have smelled a thousand scent, 
But the one thing that I want most - 
I have not and cannot covet.

Do not get me wrong, my precious goldenrod -
I love you with such fervent passion
That could make all those flowers rot with envy. 
But I cannot bring myself to be selfish. 
Because to own you is to un-root you, 
And to un-root you would mean your death.
