PrefaceA Chapter by Madi BellonIt was around nightfall when hell began. The screams of people, my people, were heard from miles away. I heard the distant, and whimpering cries of people begging for mercy. The screams alone made my heart ache, not just for them, but for myself as well. I knew that whatever was happening to them was coming for me too. From the distance, I saw the light of the fire illuminate piles of what used to be cottages. The night sky, which was quite cloudy, made the view even more ominous. I was standing on a hill, watching what used to my life turn into ash. As heartbreaking as it is to admit, I could not stand here any longer. It was time to move before I became one of the decapitated bodies that was thrown carelessly into the fire. I looked at my hands, which were bruised and dirty, and placed them on my aching heart. “I will return for you,” I murmured. “I promise.” Taking in one last breath of the breeze that was laced with ocean salt, I turned and walked bravely into the night, not daring to look back. © 2016 Madi BellonAuthor's Note
