Fragile Unreality

Fragile Unreality

A Poem by Cari Lynn Vaughn

                                                                                                        Fragile Unreality

Never closer to the heart

When the wicked lies

Threaten to tear apart

This fragile unreality

Labyrinth of walls rise

Around the sacred fears

Enclosing our precious tears

In a heart-shaped box

Compartmentalize

Rationalize

And Analyze

We would do anything

To keep away the darkness

To avoid the pain it would bring

To admit the unspeakable truth

Our words so tightly wound

Must come undone

Our Minotaur must be found

At the center at last     disillusioned

Denial

Destruction

Damaged goods

How frail this unreality can be

When the lies to ourselves we cannot see

I often think all unreality is fragile (exists in one or a few minds), maling the title a bit redundant. But that's OK because you build on this comcept as you move through the poem. In the second line of the second stanza, I found myself asking whether fears are sacred things... I usually think just the opposite - that sacred things alleviate fear. The abrupt change to instruction rather than observation in the third stanza works nicely to shift the reader's focus from a very general sense of things to specific issues in the poet's world. I like the 5th stanza best and like the ending with the exception of what feels like reversal of sentence structure to force a rhyme (that is, to get 'see' down as the llast word). Despite what may seem like harxh criticism, I like this poem. Thanks for sharing it anf what it means to you with this community. :-)

It was a written melody, as smooth as a song. The mood of it was true from beginning to end. The writing was dark and fragile. Lovely poem.
