Attempting a sonnet after being totally inspired by Linda Marie Van Tassell's wonderful work. Deeply Abiding Way.
They aren't easy to do, and I'm not sure this one is there yet.
September rain cascades throughout the night,
its sorrow lingers unprepared to pass.
I feel the sadness more with morning light
as droplets build to trickle down clear glass.
My silver birch weeps out in sympathy,
each trembling leaf is showered well with wet.
An avalanche of perfect misery,
to wallow in while waiting, though don't fret.
Ash clouds once swirling in their shades of grey,
have taken off their coats of mackintosh.
A cheery sun peeps through to say good day,
to kiss each blade of grass or tufted moss.
My world a diadem of nature's gems,
ablaze in chandeliers and crystal hems.
Thank you for the shout out. I am glad that I inspired you to write this beautiful sonnet. I have to admit though, I would I had some of that rain here in Virginia. Last year, we got so much rain. This year, it is dry as a boneyard. The grass is more like straw. Sigh! Your lovely words touched a chord, the last line beyond my absolute favorite. I can just see the prisms of color glistening in those crystal hems. Well penned.

Right off the bat, there's the tile. When rain arrives after a dry spell, you can smell the dust washing away and a clean scent taking over. I got soaked during a thunderstorm late yesterday afternoon while walking two dogs who don't seem much bothered by the dousing. Oh well, I don't shrink.
This is a lovely example of the form and , even if as you suggest, it is not quite where you would like it, it is still a fine poem. The scene plays out the way rainstorms do … I could see it … hear the raindrops … and smell the air.
Loud applause for this beautiful sonnet to the blessings of rain - I love the finalé where you describe the sheer brilliance of nature's gems - - well written and engaging this lovely read Chris.......... Fay.

It's quite a while since I penned a sonnet, but Linda's work inspired me. They need a great deal of work and take time. I think I am growing lazy and don't have quite the patience I used to have. I truly appreciate your visit. Have a great week, - end.
i think this is pretty damn close if not, right on point, Chris.
i love this because it is form not at the expense of content...i like a sonnet when i am unaware i am reading one until the end when it dawns on me...and yes, someone is crying buckets of tears when it storms....but when the some comes out, that someone is smiling.

Not many people these days appear to appreciate structured poetry. It has its place and I flit between both free verse and more of a classical style as you know. Yes when the sun comes out, what a difference it can make. Even the saddest person can feel uplifted even if only briefly.
A sonnet (perfect or not) that speaks to the range of emotions we all know. I felt the dreary heaviness conveyed in your first few lines... and then hope, “a cheery sun.” That’s what we all want to see and feel. Well-written, Chris.

I love a slow steady rain at night, with a window open to hear the drops tap the leaves on trees and then wake up to a crisp sunny morning, to everything glistening in wet. Clouds, rain, night are all the emotions within me, the sun is the smile.
This is beautiful, emotional and touching.

This is beautifully written!!! I hope someday I can write as well as you do! I love the imagery and how it allows the reader to visualize a quite vivid picture of what you're writing about in their head.

Well, I wouldn't be obtuse enough to criticize

Albert, my paternal grandfather introduced me to Tennyson when I was nine. I have loved poetry ever since but did not attempt writing a single piece until I was 40. It's never too late to try somethin.. more..
